Introduction


The Surf Life Saving SA (SLSSA) Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) provide the operational framework for lifesaving services, patrol operations, emergency response, communications, equipment use, incident management, and post-incident support.

The SOPs are designed to support consistent, safe, and effective operational practice across SLSSA services. They provide guidance for routine patrol activities, emergency operations, State Operations Centre coordination, member welfare, and other core lifesaving functions.

SLSSA recognises that surf lifesaving operates in dynamic coastal environments where conditions, hazards, public behaviour, operational demand, and emergency response requirements can change rapidly. These procedures support personnel to make informed, risk-based decisions while maintaining a consistent statewide operating framework.

The SOPs should be read in conjunction with relevant Surf Life Saving Australia policies, training manuals, award requirements, Lifesaving Service Agreements, local Patrol Operations Manuals, and any lawful directions issued by emergency services or relevant authorities.

SLS personnel are expected to be familiar with the SOPs relevant to their role and to apply them in accordance with their training, qualifications, operational capability, and local conditions.

The SLSSA Standard Operating Procedures have been developed and maintained through the dedicated efforts of staff, volunteers, operational leaders, and subject matter experts across Surf Life Saving SA.
