7.2 Radio Equipment Specifications

Purpose

To define minimum specifications and requirements for SLS radios used in SA.

Overview

Only SLSSA approved radio makes and models listed in the SLSSA Coastal Radio Network Approved Equipment List are to be utilised for lifesaving, training and sport operations to ensure compatibility and reliable operation within the SLSSA Coastal Radio Network.

Radios for lifesaving operations must be purchased only from SLSSA approved suppliers/dealers via the Surf Life Saving SA Portal at www.surflifesavingsa.com.au/portal.

SLS services must not obtain quotes directly from suppliers. Requests for quotes must be made via the Surf Life Saving SA Portal.

Only SLSSA approved radio service agents are authorised to service or program SLS radios.

SLS radios must only have the SLSSA schedule of radio frequencies/channels programmed into them, unless approved by the Manager, State Operations Centre.

SLS personnel must not provide SLSSA frequencies to external parties unless authorised by the Manager, State Operations Centre.

Non-SLS radios must not be programmed with SLSSA frequencies without written approval from the Manager, State Operations Centre.

External services authorised to hold, use or monitor SLSSA frequencies must reapply annually unless an extended approval has been provided by the Manager, State Operations Centre.

The Manager, State Operations Centre may provide extended approval for external partner agencies or stakeholders to hold, use or monitor specified SLSSA radio frequencies where there is an ongoing operational requirement. Extended approvals may include conditions, nominated frequencies and an appropriate review or expiry period.

SLS services must service all radio equipment regularly, including frequency/channel alignment, as outlined in SOP 7.3 – Radio Equipment Maintenance and Servicing.

Programming, including special functions, must be conducted in accordance with directions from the Manager, State Operations Centre.

SLS services must not operate other radio systems (e.g. VHF Marine, 27 MHz) without authorisation from the Manager, State Operations Centre.

Definitions

Base/Mobile: Fixed radio unit usually located in towers, SLSCs or vehicles.
Portable/Handheld: Radio units used by individuals.
Lifesaving Operations: Patrolling, emergency response, training, events and carnivals.
