5.2 Side By Side Vehicles (SSVs)
Purpose
To outline governance, operational equipment, and compliance requirements for Side by Side Vehicles (SSVs) utilised within SLS operations.
Overview
Side by Side Vehicles (SSVs), formerly referred to as All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs), provide SLS services with rapid beach mobility and operational response capability.
Single-seat quad bikes must not be utilised for SLS operations.
Procedure
Operator Requirements
SSV operators must:
Hold a current and valid C Class driver licence (provisional or full),
Be authorised SLS personnel,
Complete induction training for the specific vehicle,
Be competent to operate the vehicle safely, and
Only operate SSVs for approved operational purposes.
Where an SSV is operated by a provisional licence holder, P plates must be displayed in accordance with applicable South Australian legislation and regulations.
Operator inductions should be recorded by the relevant club or service.
Vehicle Standards and Compliance
All SSVs must:
Meet SLSA approved gear and equipment specifications,
Be maintained in a safe operational condition,
Be appropriately registered where required,
Comply with applicable legislation and manufacturer requirements, and
Be fitted with required safety equipment.
Any modifications including storage systems, roll bars, communications equipment, lighting, or carry racks must comply with manufacturer requirements and applicable legislation.
Single-seat quad bikes are not approved for SLS operations and may invalidate organisational insurance coverage.
Operational Equipment
Operational SSVs should carry:
Rescue board,
Rescue tube and fins,
Radio communications equipment,
Loud hailer or PA system,
Side doors or barriers where fitted,
First aid equipment where operationally required, and
Other operational equipment appropriate to the service role.
Lighting and Warning Devices
SSVs should operate with headlights activated while in motion where practicable.
Amber warning lights:
Must be hard wired,
Must comply with applicable legislation, and
Should be operated where increased visibility is required.
Sirens must not be utilised on public roads or carriageways and should only be used for approved operational purposes.
Use of warning lights or sirens does not exempt operators from complying with applicable legislation or operational requirements.
Vehicle Branding
Branding and identification of SSVs must comply with the SLSA Lifesaving Equipment and Uniform Branding Guidelines.
